Let drawing be an addiction.

elena yeo, also known as ellustrate, started learning how to draw before even learning how to write. all the endless doodles and drawings on heaps and heaps of rough papers from young proved useful as she continued to develop her rendering skills and style till present. she started off her art education at a humble night art class at a nearby community centre before spending two years attending courses in NAFA (Nanyang academy school of fine arts) developing her linework and traditional water colouring. she took on art and design in secondary school and was awarded the "Art and Design Prize" for both upper secondary years as being the top art student in MGS. (Methodist Girls' School).

despite the sudden stop in her art during the junior college days, she continued pursuing what she felt was her drive and passion all along and got admitted into NTU School of Art, Design and Media. she will be graduating come July 2011 with the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Visual Communications with second class honours (upper division).

at present, she is a part-time illustrator and designer at cum. media and design studio while being a self-employed art teacher, conducting private art class in the children's homes, (details on her art-teaching blog, art voyagers.) She also teaches art at the Amazing Art Shuttle alongside her close friend and senior. With all that, she does more design and illustration projects when her time allows. her works comprised of graphic design, illustrations and a secret interest in photography. her favorites still lies in illustrations and illustrating and using her pens to create her own style of illustrations that is typographic, ornate, dynamic and very personal.

Updates! FINALLY.

Finally! AN UPDATE!

Earthtone silverfrom the last post in July, quite frankly, heaps of things have happened. first up! RESULTS for Crowbar Award 2011: I'm beyond delighted to announce that my FYP Project, EarthTone was awarded the Silver award in Design (Illustration). One of my first few serious art awards and a perfect ending (or perhaps) start of my exciting illustration journey. Seriously, Earthtone has given me the chance to really train up my digital illustration skills to be able to do fine line work on a digital platform and to be comfortable with it. it was quite a journey (: and here's more pictures from the event! Michael's charlie's angels

And in other news, in the next four months after graduation, I started my own line of private artclasses, teaching children from their homes and I must say, I really do enjoy sharing the love of art with them and they NEVER fail to amaze me each lesson with their enthusiasm and raw creative energy that is just so pure and innocently beautiful. they are truly amazing young artists! who says only talented people can draw!! Also, I recently got the privilege to be part of a small yet amazing and fun company, cum. (do not be misled by its name! it means coagulation and combination! with works so kickass that you will possibly.....) they are so fierce in their work and such greatly skilled creative individuals who knows how to have fun amidst work! an amazing group! and I am so happy to be part of their dreamteam as a part-time illustrator and designer.

Recently, I've completed some illustrations for some big names, /TBWA and Ogilvy&Mather and is very excited that the O&M job landed as a post on OIC! It has always been my dream to get into the OIC circle and seeing my work there was simply UNREAL! (Works are placed in the commercial tab) More illustration projects-in-progress; one where I'm illustrating bookmarks at Graceland International which would be printed by the new year, another is a wall illustration for a good friend who is opening her salad shop at SMU!! and one more showcase with WHotel, international Hotel Chain that recently open its first branch in Singapore at Sentosa Cove (this project will be starting March 2012 next year)

So many things have happened and I must say that I am so happy with what I'm dubbling with now and I really thank God for His provenance and guidance each new and exciting day.

Hopefully my next update would not be donkey years later but till then, keep the drawing vibe alive!

Crowbar Awards 2011 finals!

fyp logo

I am very delighted to announced that my FYP Project, Earthtone has made it to Crowbar Awards 2011 FINALS, design // Illustration category. Admittedly, signed up for the awards without any expectations but knowing that this would be one of the last times I can sign up under a school as an undergrad. This nomination was really encouraging and has definitely boosted my morale as an illustrator and designer as to what kind of standard of work I can be capable of. congrats to all my friends who have made it as well.

Results in August! will keep everyone updated!

major update on the site! and I ORD LO!

fyp logo

it has been quite a long time since I have updated the site. during my last semester in school, was busy for a year focused on my FYP project that was titled EarthTone. a new tab on my Portfolio section has been created to house all of its images. all the months of hardwork and craft-making paid off as I accomplished my last goal before graduation to learn and get a grasp of After Effects and ended of my degree with a perfect semester with a perfect GPA of 5! With a distinction in my FYP and that being the only module counted in the last semester; what a great end (: special thanks to my Asst. Profesoor Michael Tan and also to family and friends for their support morally and emotionally and also to God for holding me up with the inspiration and strength.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
Timothy 4:7

But ofcourse I have always believed in process more than results. the journey is always what I have been interested in actually. that aside, MORE UPDATES, i have updated most of the tabs with new works and also my motion graphic for my FYP is added on.

at present, as I cruise off in the mode of graduation, I will be starting off my next phrase with some freelance projects and jobs. continuing my teaching in Amazing Art Shuttle and looking forward to opening more classes, got a graphic design project coming up with a film company, an illustration project with a big advert firm and a pending teaching contract with Mastereign Enrichment.

for the website, am planning to expand it with an additional "doodle" tab that houses sketches, brainstorms and in-betweens which i find the most interesting and important as compared to the final artwork.

Have fought a good fight, I know the race is still not really over (: but ORD LO!

ellustrate's new portfolio website, LAUNCHED!

I have just re-launched my portfolio webpage! with new and improved layout! :D been having plans to revamp the site but only gotten down to properly doing it now that school is about a week away (not that it matters now that fyp is "supposed" to be on-going with or without school) But yes, due to my complete lack of knowledge in web design, I spent days browsing web templates and finally settled on buying one.

"To keep on improving and never stop learning." (I'm just trying out this quote box actually. haha)
A very wise man

Afterwhich, weeks followed as I courageously opened Dreamweaver for the first time, watched a few tutorials and pulled my hair several times while coding and typing out html and POOF! managed to modify the layout to suit my style and here it is!

the portfolio tab is still under construction but the rest are pretty doned. (pat on the back for my first chiong-night since i can't remember when. and time to sleep at 5am!) good morning!

coming soon! ellustrate's final year project

illustrated tones: one's inner voice revealed through music and illustration
(a working title that changes every month)

highly anticipated.

i'm just fooling around but yes, currently caught up with fyp in my last year in adm. details of this random poster on illustration tab, featuring one of my visual explorations so far.

Ellustrate@Noise 2010

In conjunction with YOG this august, Noise has done a showcase, displaying youth artistic vibe and energy in singapore, and I'm more than honored to be chosen as a commissioned designer for the showcase this time. Participated in 3 different areas this time round:

hanging mobileFirstly is the first project that was commissioned, Illustrations on 10 glass bottles that ultimately was made into a hanging lit-up mobile for the Noise House in Changi Airport Terminal 3. The work is titled "Random quotes to do with light", entirely random as the title says, and since I am always typographically driven, these quotes serve to be the very inspiration themselves.

Illustrations and close-ups of the bottles will be found in the illustrations tab, whereas on-site documentation and rest of the close-ups will be found in commercial tab. at the portfolio section.

i personally love process shots! these bottles were done on the night/morning of FIFA WORLDCUP2010, when the bottles were done, spain has just won and I’m glad soccer accompanied me all night to finish this project off! that was one tiring sleepless night.

Secondly, was further commissioned afterwards to illustrate a 2m x 6m panel for the front of the Noise House which was ultimately placed at the one at Ion Orchard. Illustration will be found in the illustration tab, on-site documentation will be found in commercial.

Thirdly, is the same work being displayed on busstops after request from NAC. Images from on-site will be found in commercial, there were 2 busstops altogther.

ultimately, this is probably the second time that i have publicly showcased my work and first time then it has been placed extensively in separate places. first time exposure for me and thought it was a great start to more to come! gathered awesome feedback from the organisers at the Changi Airport about people who wanted to buy my works, and even contacts of people who wanted to hold an exhibition for them! such an encouragement, and be sure, that it is definitely not the last you’ll seen ellustrate blasting her works in public with a BANG!

Endless doodlin'

bottleshello there!

it has been quite a while since i’ve posted here. here’s a quick update about what i’ve been up to.

Last week i wrapped up my Design Internship with Lucidity, a design house, and i must say that i enjoyed my time there and they do hold good standards of design there and it was an enriching and fulfilling 10weeks there having a taste of the design industry.

Once internship ended, I started to put all my focus on some of the outside projects which I have been working on, one big one with Noise Singapore. Recently I have been commissioned as a designer/illustrator for NOISE SHOWCASE 2010. Ofcourse, I cannot publish any of my works as yet as the project is still ongoing. Was happy to know that after being commissioned for the first project, the events company came back to me again asking if I would like to design another component of the showcase, and it wasn’t long before NAC comes asking if I could contribute my designs there as well. And these all have kept me busy ever since! HUGE PHOTOSHOP FILES IS REALLY KILLING MY MACBOOK BLACK AND PHOTOSHOP! Will post up images once my works are being showcased (tentatively early August – Oct) But here’s a SNEEK PEAK of the first commissioned work!

Also, I signed myself up for OIC 4th Anniversary roll-call! Saw it as a chance to really showcase my illustrators to the outside illustration circle and miraculously, even with the NOISE project breathing down my neck, I managed to submit 3 works in say, 2 days? I guess when it boils down to serious illustrations, I really make myself work fast and to my own standard. Sure was I glad that I made it in time for the submissions! Again, not very right to start posting the illustrations when is meant for OIC, shall post on a later date! but I WILL post them (:

Just did an illustrative poster for my school, ADM GradBash 2010 for our 2nd Graduating Batch and boy am i going to miss my seniors, seriously, they’ve been great korkor and jiejies to me, teaching me how to handle failed printers and spoilt connections and hanged softwares. and I

will them all the best! details up in illustration tab!

And I’m quite happy endlessly doodling and earning money for FYP! hahaa. which reminds me, more research! Also I have yet to post upmy last-semester’s packaging and publication works. Shall do so when I feel hardworking and up to it.
